GREEN DRAGON HOUSE + EXTENSION LINK, HOLBORN, LONDON, UK
The redevelopment for residential purposes of a backlands site behind the old Town Hall to provide 29 units with a total of 60 bedrooms for nearly 100 occupants. It includes a terrace of five 3 storey houses and flats and maisonettes in blocks rising to a maximum of 6 storeys.
The buildings are arranged around the perimeter of the site, the centre provides a combination of private gardens and communal space. The open space is complimented by roof terraces and balconies.
The development was complicated by potential archaeological interest arising from its possible location within the boundaries of the Saxon Lundenwic settlement and the alignment of the proposed Crossrail tunnel beneath the site.
2000 Evening Standard New Homes Award: "Best new development by a Housing Association".
A later extension was added to provide a link connecting the ground floor areas of two adjacent blocks. It is clad in patina copper and forms a large special needs flat.
